MotoTrax, a Spokane Valley-based company, manufactures snow bike conversion kits for dirt bikes. The company's patented system uses a skid that pivots nine degrees on either side, mimicking the front and rear suspension of a dirt bike.

Backed by people who are dirt bikers first and winter enthusiasts second, MotoTrax's goal is to make a snow bike that handles as much like a dirt bike as possible. Its kits are designed to be responsive and nimble, making them a better choice for off-road skiing or racing in the snow.

Founded in 2015, the company has grown to five employees and plans to add another two to four in the near future. It expects to reach $5 million in revenue this year, says Ezra Eckhardt, former Sterling Bank president and COO and a member of the MotoTrax board.

Tom Simpson, a Spokane-based entrepreneur and investor, has invested $1 million of his Kick-Start III venture fund in MotoTrax to help the company grow, Simpson says. The company sold 350 kits last year, a fourfold increase from 2015, according to Eckhardt.

The company expects to sell 1,000 kits this year, Eckhardt said. Its assembly parts are made locally by Hydrafab Northwest Inc. and are sold through a dealer network.

Riders must possess a variety of skills to compete in motocross, including strength, endurance and balance. These abilities will allow riders to move their bodies quickly and efficiently on off-road terrain, thereby maximizing their speed on the track.
